Bloch Sits Atop World Series of Poker Europe Main Event Leaderboard
September 30, 2008
By the close of Day 1B, many World Series of Poker Europe Main Event participants turned their attention to Justin “BoostedJ” Smith and Daniel Negreanu, who occupied the top two spots in the chip counts after leading each of their respective Day 1’s. By the time Day 2 fired up, the announcment of the prize pool seemed to turn the focus to the task at hand.
After the second of two Day 1 flights had wrapped, just 179 players still had a place in the chip counts. When it was announced that the GBP 3,630,000 ($6,540,630 USD) prize pool would be only handed out to 36 players, players began to make their move.
Both “BoostedJ” and Negreanu bagged more chips than the night before. While they won’t be looking down at the rest of the field, they each managed to sit above the 200,000 chip mark, which is good for 8th and 9th-place, respectively.
Today was a big day for the Americans. To start day three, the four biggest stacks will sit in front of players from across the pond, while only two of the top ten chip stacks hail from outside the U.S. The biggest stack belongs to the overdue Andy Bloch. Nobody has appeared at as many WSOP final tables as Bloch without a win. He’ll enter Day 3 as the only player in the 300,000 club. Right behind bloch is online phenom Brian “sbrugby” Townsend. “sbrugby” accrued most of his chips after flopping a set of aces and taking a 250,000 pot away from a player married to his A-K.
Doug Smith
September 29, 2008
CGN: When did you decide to play poker for a living?
Doug Smith: About this time last year when I was just about done of my accounting degree at UPEI and I really did not want to go back, there was so much out in the world that I wanted to see and do, I even thought about working in the trades as a carpenter or even just traveling for a year. So I didn’t go back to school in September and worked at building a park in my home town of Hunter River until February. When my cousin from Vancouver was home for Christmas he said that if I ever wanted to move there was lots of work in Vancouver. Read more
Day 2 at World Series of Poker Europe Main Event
September 29, 2008
After a somewhat small-ish turnout for the first day of the 2008 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event, stragglers swarmed the Empire Casino in London for the second of two Day 1 starting flights. By the time registration had closed, 203 players had ponied up the GBP 10,000 ($18,100 USD) buy-in, a big jump from the 159 who took part in Day 1A.
But at the end of the day, everyone was looking up to Daniel Negreanu. “Kid Poker” laid low while Rosen drove the chip counts, only to sweep in during the day’s closing levels to grab the lead. Key reads and traps lead Negreanu to pick up larges pots on jacks full and a set of sixes in just a matter of hands. Those pots put Negreanu over the 100,000 mark and he never looked back.
