Flames lend ‘hands’ at charity poker tables

February 26, 2009

On the day of the Calgary Flames Ambassadors’ fourth annual poker tournament, it made sense to ask–who is the best card player on the current squad?

And the worst?

Those nominated as card sharps were Cory Sarich, Eric Nystrom, David Moss, Daymond Langkow, Matthew Lombardi, Michael Cammalleri.

“Cammy’s a guy who thinks he’s good, but that’s part of it–you have to think you’re good,” Moss said Wednesday afternoon. “You’ve got to be confident. It’s all attitude.”

Added Nystrom: “I am (the best), obviously. We had a 10-man game not too long ago and I cleaned up pretty good.”

(Nearly managing to suppress a chuckle, Adrian Aucoin claimed to like Andre Roy’s poker-table abilities. “He’s very good at keeping his composure when pressure’s on.”)

As far as pigeons, Miikka Kiprusoff admitted that he’s an easy mark. “Me, for sure.”

Poker pro Chris ‘Jesus’ Ferguson is the chip leader at the WPT LA Poker Classic

February 26, 2009

The WPT LA Poker Classic is getting down to its final days at the Commerce Casino, and with only 20 players remaining, poker pro Chris “Jesus” Ferguson is leading the way.

Ferguson started Day 4 outside of the top ten chip counts, but as he’s diplayed many, many times, he’s one of the best No Limit Holdem tournament players out there. He finished the day almost 300k in chips clear of second place’s Payman Arjang. The man who would be Jesus has cashed in eight different WPT events and has reached one televised final table, which on the World Poker Tour is the last six players.

Unfortunately, we lost some good people during the first few levels of the day. The field got a whole lot less attractive when Maria Ho and Erica Schoenberg busted out in 43rd and 37th, resepctively. Then, it went on to get a whole lot less talented with the loss of David “The Dragon” Pham, Nick Binger, Nenad Medic and Men “The Master” Nguyen.

Surviving the carnage in these late stages to go forward to Day 5 were Teddy “Iceman” Monroe, Blake Cahail, Zach Hyman, Peter Feldman, Mike Sowers and Nick Schulman. The players will get back down to business later on today and will play down to the last six who will make up that televised final table. Up for grabs is the $1,686,760 first-place prize and eternal glory as a WPT champion, or that WPT-Made Millionaire thing that was big last year.

Tips for Online Poker Success

February 9, 2009

I have enjoyed playing poker online successfully for a few years now, and so I have decided to share some tips with you that will hopefully help you in turn to share some of my successes.

You need to ask yourself a simple question before you begin to play poker online for money – do you enjoy it? Could you realistically see yourself playing it for several hours every day and not getting bored? If this is not the case, you should stop reading right now; poker is not the game for you. I personally feel it is great to meet people from such a vast variety of cultures and walks of life, people who I would never have even dreamed of meeting had I not played poker. However, some arrogant players will take any opportunity they can to be rude and impolite to those around them. Try to ignore these comments as best you can. Read more

Canadian Poker Report on PokerStars’ Caribbean Adventure

February 9, 2009

An unknown player from Canada, Poorya Nazari, has moved to the top of the table listing the largest cash winners in poker in 2009. Nazari is from Toronto, Canada and graduated from college last month.

The PokerStars’ Caribbean Adventure’s main event was held in the Atlantis Resort, with over 1300 people taking part, most of who qualified via online tournaments, many from PokerStars itself.

Nazari admitted to being shocked by his huge win, commenting, “It was only today I started thinking about winning. At one point yesterday I was down to virtually nothing but I got off to a good start today and at that point I thought I might have a shot.” Read more

10 Great Poker Tips to Improve Your Play

February 7, 2009

By following these 10 tips you should be able to enhance your game and win more money at the tables. These tips are aimed at beginners, but even good players should remind themselves of the following basic principles:

1) Play fewer hands:

Many beginning players often seem to find themselves in far too many hands. The reality is that even though a face card can look appealing if you are a new player, and it is tempting to play them, they often are not worth a call. If you are staying in in over half the hands dealt, you are probably staying in too many, and should consider only playing higher cards.

2) Don’t play whilst drunk:

This is quite simply a nonsensical way to play. You need to concentrate and be alert whilst playing poker – clearly if you are drunk you are going to be at a big disadvantage. Even if you are not fully drunk, having alcohol in your system will mean that you do not play as sharply and carefully as you would otherwise.

3) Don’t bluff simply for bluffing’s sake:

Many beginners look upon bluffing as an exciting and advanced technique, and want to try it to attempt to squeeze more chips from their opponents. The reality is that if you bluff at the wrong times, or against the wrong players, you will quickly end up losing a large amount of chips. Bluffing is not a necessary part of the game; it is entirely possibly to win a large amount of chips without bluffing.
