Meskwaki Tribal Council approves poker for under-21 gamblers

May 8, 2008

Gamblers under 21 may soon be playing poker at the Meskwaki casino near Tama.

The Tribal Council has approved a plan to allow 18- to 21-years-old to play poker games such as Texas Hold ‘em. A date for the change hasn’t been set.

Tribal spokesman Larry Lasley Jr. says the tribe can make the change because players, not the casino, provide the game’s jackpot when they buy into the game.

The tribe’s gaming compact with the state regulates games such as blackjack — the casino provides a dealer and has a stake in the outcome.

Positive thinkers in trouble?

May 6, 2008

Studies have shown that the more positive you are while gambling can get you in a heap of trouble! They tend to only think of the great wins instead of those great losses. Gambling always has it’s “ups and downs” so it is best to factor all of it in while placing that one last bet.

Foxwoods Casino Wins Latest Battle With Unions

May 5, 2008

Foxwoods Resort Casino is beginning to have a major battle in their efforts to keep their workers from unionizing. After Thursday, the score now stands one for unions, one for Foxwoods.

The engineering department had their turn to vote on Thursday as to whether or not to unionize. The vote did not go the same way the last union vote went at the Foxwoods.

Engineers turned down the option of having union representation by a surprising large number. 215 workers voted against being unionized, while only 67 voted in favor. Foxwoods officials were pleased with the outcome.

“We are pleased with the vote of confidence that employees have given Foxwoods management today. Those team members displayed outstanding professionalism through the entire process and clearly agreed that having an intermediary come between us wasn’t necessary,” said Foxwoods President, Barry Cregan.

That is a bit different than the tune Foxwoods was singing back in November. When dealers voted to unionize, Foxwoods cried foul, and is still contesting the vote in court. When the vote went in their favor on Thursday, they amazingly had no problem with the process.

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 30 thought they had enough workers’ support that they could win in a vote, but they turned out to be overstating the amount of workers who actually wanted their representation.

‘Casino will bring billions in revenue’

Celebration Jamaica, one of two entities selected to receive a casino licence, is promising that occupancy rates at hotels near the facility will increase by up to 20 per cent.

The construction of Celebration Jamaica is expected to begin once the developers receive a casino licence.

Struggling to deal with a negative backlash from persons opposed to casino gaming, the company’s officials on Thursday night outlined plans for the development, which, it said, should put between $13 and $15 billion a year into the Government’s coffers.

Gun Lake casino foes’ last hope is the U.S. Supreme Court

WAYLAND — Opponents of a tribal casino in Wayland Township are preparing to play what likely is their last hand.

Their hopes rest on the U.S. Supreme Court’s willingness to hear a constitutional challenge to a Depression-era law that was supposed to help tribes re-establish themselves.

If successful, the case could rewrite how American Indian tribes secure and expand their reservations.

Backers of the proposed Gun Lake Casino call the tactic a longshot and say they are moving forward with the $200 million project.
