“Devilfish” Wins CardPlayerEurope.com Player of the Year Title

January 23, 2008

Dublin, Ireland (PRWEB) January 23, 2008 — Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott is the 2007 CardPlayerEurope.com European Player of the Year (EPoY) after his third-place finish in the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic on Dec. 17, 2007 catapulted the wily Englishman to the top of the leader board with 3,446 points.

Ulliott’s late surge saw him overtake Chris Bjorin right at the wire — the Swede had dominated the rankings for much of the year after an impressive World Series of Poker run which saw him make three final tables as well as a creditable 15th in the WPT Doyle Brunson Classic. Ulliott had his most successful year in tournament poker ever in 2007, winning $1.2 million dollars and making five major final tables.

Norway’s teen phenom Annette Obrestad came third in the EPoY rankings after winning the World Series of Poker Europe main event in London and taking second in the European Poker Tour Dublin. Russian Alexander Kravchenko, who won a bracelet at the 2007 WSOP and made the final table of the main event, finished fourth.

US gambler loses $30,000 poker haul

January 21, 2008

A YOUNG American gambler robbed of his $30,000 poker winnings at knife-point yesterday believes he was stalked inside Crown complex.
Jason Potter, 22, who placed 31st of a field of 780 at the Aussie Millions poker tournament, had cashed in his winnings at Crown’s cashier desk about 4am.

After buying some takeaway food, Mr Potter began strolling back to his hotel across the Spencer St footbridge.

“I heard some footsteps, running very quickly behind me, and I was knocked on the back of the head,” he said.

“I fell down, and this gentleman just reaches, immediately, right into my hoodie pocket — which tells me he kinda knew where to look.

“It points to him, you know, seeing me earlier in the casino,” Mr Potter said.

He said the man then brandished a 30cm knife in front of his face and warned him not to call police.

“I did briefly go to fight back until I saw the knife but . . . no amount of money is worth (the risk),” said Mr Potter, who has earned about $345,000 in poker tournaments in America.

Day 1A of the World Poker Open

January 21, 2008

Small Field Attracts Big Crowds

With all of the tournaments currently running around the world, day 1A of the World Poker Tour’s annual World Poker Open attracted 117 players. Facing competition from the Aussie Millions, Borgata preliminaries and even the World Series of Poker circuit event across the street, the Gold Strike decided to split its starting day in two, to give all the players who may be traveling time to make the trip to Tunica, Mississippi.

Despite the low turnout, the rail was packed from start to finish with locals trying to catch a glimpse of their favorite pros and perhaps an autograph or two. While players like David “The Dragon” Pham, Dutch Boyd, Freddy Deeb, David “The Devilfish” Ulliot, Humberto Brenes, Jaime Gold, Nam Le, and J.C. Tran got their fair share of attention, the majority of the crowd clamored to watch Daniel Negreanu try to make his annual visit to the final table.

Warne shuns cricket for poker

January 21, 2008

The unexpected was always the essential stock-in-trade of the Australian cricketer Shane Warne. His ability to deceive opposing batsmen through the arts of spin and flight had brought him 708 victims in five-day test matches - a record, at the time - when he retired from international cricket at the beginning of 2007, and he has shown the same ability to produce surprises off the pitch.

Shane WarneA few months ago, it was reported that he was considering invoking his mother’s ancestry and seeking a German passport, an ingenious device for making him a European Union citizen and sidestepping quotas governing the number of non-EU players in English county cricket, where he plays for and is captain of Hampshire.

Now comes the announcement that he has joined the professional poker circuit, signing with the online company 888.com to play in the World Series of Poker, starting in this week’s Aussie Millions tournament in his hometown, Melbourne.

Warne, 38, said that he expected to play in events in the United States, New Zealand, South Africa and Britain during 2008 and that he still had a great deal to learn about poker.

Hellmuth to head to European Open IV

January 18, 2008

The PartyPoker European Open IV is set to get under way Feb. 1-8 with possibly the strongest field it’s seen so far. That playing field will be led by Phil Hellmuth and his 11 World Series of Poker bracelets.

Not only will Phil Hellmuth lead the playing field into battle, he’ll be joining Jesse May in the commentary box as well.

“I am really looking forward to playing in, and commentating for, the European Open,” Hellmuth said in a press release. “I am flying from California to London for one reason: to win, baby!”

To reach that goal, Hellmuth will have to face returning champ Liam Flood. Flood conquered a final table that included former World Open Champions Pippa Flanders and John Magill to earn the title last year.
