First Looks: Blackjack 21 and Shanghai Mahjong
July 15, 2008
Today, I got a chance to play Mobile Age’s two App Store games: Blackjack 21 and Shanghai Mahjong. As the names suggest, these two familiar classics were ported to the iPhone platform. I started off with the Mahjong, which is a solitaire game the goal of which is to remove all the tiles on-screen by matching pairs.
The game itself is beautifully presented but the interaction falls short. Rather than re-design the game for iPhone, it was ported. The tiles are tiny. When I placed my finger tip on top of the display, I covered about 6 tiles at once. The presentation made selecting individual tiles tricky and identifying them harder — especially for one as myopic as myself. Two on-board buttons at the bottom left and right of the screen proved particularly difficult to tap. The game does not offer zooming. In the end, I was unable to enjoy playing the game.
Which Blackjack Game Is Better?
July 10, 2008
For the non-card counter, the best game is one where the casino cuts off a lot of cards. Look to see games where the casino cuts half the cards out of play. That means the dealers have to shuffle a lot and that wastes time and allows you to get comp time without “money-at-risk” time.
If both the 6-Deck and the 2-Deck have the exact same rules and the exact (or close to it) penetration then the 2-Deck game will be superior for you.
I’d recommend you learn our new Speed Count, the easiest advantage method ever developed for getting a real, mathematical edge at blackjack. This can be found in my book Golden Touch Blackjack Revolution! You might also consider taking our Golden Touch Blackjack class. You can call us at 1-800-944-0406 to buy the book and/or sign up for the class.
For your great letter I am giving you a free 10-day subscription to my private web site at www.goldentouchcraps.com. We have over 5,000 members on this site, many of them blackjack players, and the conversations are lively, enjoyable and interesting. I think you will enjoy it.
Blackjack Makes a Move From the Web to Television
July 9, 2008
Movies have become TV shows (“Terminator”), Webisodes have become TV shows (“Quarterlife”) and books have become TV shows (“Gossip Girl”). Now a casual online game is making the leap to the television screen. The cable channel GSN (formerly the Game Show Network) has set a July 21 premiere date for “Catch 21,” a TV version of a popular online blackjack game.
Computer versions of TV game shows have existed for years; the Nintendo Entertainment System featured antique eight-bit versions of “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune” 20 years ago. But television adaptations of online games are a nascent idea.
Online Blackjack Game Makes Move to TV
July 8, 2008
ANTA MONICA, July 7: On July 21, GSN will premiere Catch 21, a new game show from Merrill Heatter that is based on a popular online blackjack game.
The 40-episode series, created by Heatter—of Hollywood Squares fame—and executive produced by Scott Sternberg, blends pop trivia with the classic card game 21. Host Alfonso Ribiero, best known for his run on the 90s sitcom hit Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, will quiz three contestants at a time as they compete to build a hand closest to 21. With every card they are dealt, contestants gain the power to make their competition’s hand worse by passing their cards.
