The World Series of Poker has always attracted a competitive international field. This year’s WSOP featured more players from Russia than ever before. That’s a trend that’s likely to continue.
Last year, the main event’s final table included Alex Kravchenko, who finished in fourth place.
This year, Ivan Demidov sits in the final table’s second chip position.

Card-playing bots could doom online poker
August 8, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. — The premise underlying online poker is that all players are humans. But with the growing availability of free poker “bot” downloads, it is becoming difficult to detect whether a player is real or a possibly unbeatable bot.
“It wasn’t until mid-2000, [when] an algorithm was developed, that [bots] could even come close to a competent player. But now online computer poker playing may become a thing of the past,” said Ian Fellows, a researcher at the University of California at San Diego and author of the open-source poker bot, “Fell Omen.”
World Poker Tour Host Mike Sexton Featured on PocketFives Podcast
August 7, 2008
San Jose, Costa Rica (OPENPRESS) August 7, 2008 — The World Poker Tour has made headlines over the last week. The tournament series found a new home on Fox Sports Net for its seventh season and, just hours later, crowned the champion of its fourth Bellagio Cup, PocketFiver Mike “SirWatts” Watson. At the center of the action on the WPT circuit is Mike Sexton, lead commentator alongside Hollywood heartthrob Vince Van Patten. They have been the voice of the World Poker Tour since it debuted in 2002. Sexton joins the PocketFives Podcast this week.
Sexton comments on his thoughts when he learned that GSN, which currently airs the sixth season of the World Poker Tour, elected not to pick up the exclusive rights to Season VII: I was happy about it because I didn’t think that GSN was the right partner. I was continually bombarded with people asking me how to get GSN. They didn’t have the money to market the show properly. I think that Fox Sports Net is the perfect fit and that the WPT is going to shine.
Full Tilt Poker Down for Maintenance All Day
August 5, 2008
The world’s second largest online poker - Full Tilt Poker - announced a down period for the entire day Tuesday. European poker addicts in particular were most affected as the maintenance schedule was being conducted via California time (Pacific Standard Time).
3AM PST to 8AM PST to be more specific. For the Euro crowd that meant they would be unable to access Full Tilt until some time in the mid afternoon if not later. Those living in the Pacific US states would be least affected by the downtime.
The long closure period was presumably scheduled for a time during the morning when most US customers were either sleeping in, heading for work and least likely to be playing online poker. But addicts are addicts.
Online Poker: Interview with Mike ‘SirWatts’ Watson
August 4, 2008
Waterloo, Canada, is claiming more and more poker success these days, as the city is, apparently, a breeding ground for online poker phenoms. The latest Waterloo resident to make a splash (no pun intended) is Mike “SirWatts” Watson. Watson had an incredible run online in 2007, and he has already pulled into the top 20 in the Online Player of the Year race for 2008, earning almost $300,000 in qualified cashes.

August 1, 2008
NEW YORK, Jul 31, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Scott Montgomery is the overwhelming choice to win the World Series of Poker (WSOP), according to a new DuplicatePoker.com poll. Twenty-nine percent of 1106 poker players surveyed named Canadian Scott Montgomery by a more than a 2-to-1 margin over the rest of the November Nine WSOP finalists. Ivan Demidov (Russia) and chip leader Illinois-resident Dennis Phillips, already seated in position one at the Final Table with 26 million chips, were named by 13 and 12 percent respectively as the expected runners-up. Montgomery also was voted the most skilled of the WSOP finalists and the most likely to win a Duplicate Poker tournament.
