New ‘Superuser’ allegations raised, this time against Ultimate Bet poker

January 15, 2008

Right on the heels of the release of the KGC report detailing the involvement of Absolute Poker in the largest reported cheating scandal in online poker history, a new set of allegations is making the rounds at the major online poker forums. This time, the room in question is Ultimate Bet, but the alleged method of cheating - a superuser account that has access to player hole card data - seems to be more or less the same.

This story is in a very preliminary stage, and lacks the blatantly obvious evidence that the Absolute story featured. Also, there’ been no official comment from anyone over at UB on this story as of yet.

The allegations center around a player with the handle ‘NioNio’, who reportedly beat several of the top online pros at high stakes no limit on UB with what would be considered an unconventional style at best. The initial allegations are summarized, along with the available data, in this thread on 2+2. Excerpt from dlpnyc21’s post:

PokerStars

PokerStars is the largest online poker cardroom in the world.

PokerStars’ satellite tournaments produced the 2003 World Series of Poker champion, Chris Moneymaker, as well as the 2004 champion, Greg “Fossilman” Raymer. Those two now act as spokespeople for the cardroom, as does 2005 World Series of Poker champion Joe Hachem, also a regular player on the site. In March 2007, poker room manager Lee Jones announced his retirement, effective April 1. His successor has yet to be named.

Launched in September 2001, PokerStars is owned by a Costa Rican company, Rational Enterprises. With its company headquarters on the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, PokerStars is also licensed by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission in Canada. Since relocating to the UK Crown dependency, PokerStars has been the subject of financial media speculation regarding a possible IPO or merger with a publicly listed company. Analysts estimated its market value would be approximately $3 billion (US), which would have made the company one of the world’s largest privately held gambling companies.

PokerStars overtook PartyPoker as the world’s largest online poker room at around the time the U.S. Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Many sites, including PartyPoker, immediately suspended business with U.S. gamblers, while others, including PokerStars, did not. On May 19, 2007, PokerStars dealt their 10,000,000,000th hand.

PokerStars is the headline sponsor of the European Poker Tour. PokerStars sponsored an event on the World Poker Tour called the PokerStars Caribbean Poker Adventure. The World Poker Tour no longer stages this event, so it is now a stop on the European Poker Tour. In 2005, eGaming Review named PokerStars.com the “Best Poker Operator of the Year”.

PokerStars offers eight varieties of poker games: Texas hold ‘em, Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo (8 or Better), Stud, Stud Hi/Lo (8 or Better), Razz, five-card draw, and deuce to seven triple draw. HORSE and HOSE, “mixed games” that rotate through several of the above, are also offered. Players can participate in real money games ranging from $.01/$.02 (micro limits) up to $1000/$2000.

Pokerstars offers hand history files for analysis, discussion and conversion using a poker hand converter.

The home of the World Championship of Online Poker, the largest online poker tournament series in the world, PokerStars has over ten thousand players playing real money ring games daily, plus thousands more playing real money tournaments or free-play games. During peak operating times, this often adds up to over 100,000 players online simultaneously. PokerStars.com’s play money players mix with those logging in from PokerStars.net, a free play-only site without real money games. The site also hosts the Sunday Million, a weekly tournament (generally with a $215 buy-in) with a guaranteed million dollar prize pool. On July 8, 2007, PokerStars debuted a new weekly event, the $11 buy-in Sunday Hundred Grand, which regularly attracts the tournament maximum 20,000 players, making it the largest participated-in real-money poker tournament ever. This total surpassed the previous record of 10,894 players who participated in the May 20, 2007 Sunday Million tournament.

PokerStars sponsors several professional players including Moneymaker, Raymer, Hachem, Bertrand Grospellier, Isabelle Mercier, John Duthie, Lee Nelson, Luca Pagano, Steve Paul-Ambrose, Vanessa Rousso, Victor Ramdin, Noah Boeken, Andre Akkari, Hevad Khan, Dario Minieri, Raymond Rahme, Tuan Lam, as well as WSOP bracelet winners Barry Greenstein, Humberto Brenes, Bill Chen, 1983 WSOP champion Tom McEvoy, Daniel Negreanu, and Katja Thater.

PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Enters Day 2

January 8, 2008

The European Poker Tour PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) enters its second day today (technically its third day of play), and, for the first time during the tournament, the playing field will be combined after playing two day 1s.

A whopping 1,136 players entered this year’s PCA. This is the first year the tournament will be part of the EPT series ofDaniel Negreanu and David Wells events. This popular event has been a World Poker Tour staple for years. PokerStars, though, owns the EPT, and pulled this signature event into its fold for 2008.

This is by far the largest event in the EPT’s four-season history. Last year’s grand final attracted 706 players. If this event remained a WPT event, it would also have been the largest WPT event ever, beating the number of entrants at the 2007 L.A. Poker Classic by 345 (791 played in that event).

The players generated a prize pool of $8.5 million, and $2 million of that will go to the eventual winner. The PCA started on Saturday when 556 players played in day 1A of the PCA. The day ended with 232 players standing. Today, they join the 246 survivors from the 580 players who played in day 1B, which took place yesterday.

Keith McFadden Leads at the End of Day One at the PartyPoker IPC

January 7, 2008

At the close of play last night, 132 players remained at the end of an exciting first day’s play at the Irish Poker Championships which are underway in Galway. The average chip stack was around 22,578 and the overnight chip leader was Keith McFadden who had amassed over 100,000 in chips. Notable ‘big name’ players still in the hunt included Mike Sexton, Rory Liffey and Robert Williamson III, who were all well placed to launch an assault on day two.

The pre-tournament favourite, Marcel Luske, was eliminated from the tournament two hours before the end of the first day’s play, arguably paying the price for not raising pre-flop.
