Gun Lake casino foes’ last hope is the U.S. Supreme Court
WAYLAND — Opponents of a tribal casino in Wayland Township are preparing to play what likely is their last hand.
Their hopes rest on the U.S. Supreme Court’s willingness to hear a constitutional challenge to a Depression-era law that was supposed to help tribes re-establish themselves.
If successful, the case could rewrite how American Indian tribes secure and expand their reservations.
Backers of the proposed Gun Lake Casino call the tactic a longshot and say they are moving forward with the $200 million project.
Split Rock casino application supported at hearing
LAKE HARMONY – A day after most of the witnesses at a hearing on Fernwood Resort’s casino application voiced enthusiastic support, Split Rock Resort received a unanimous endorsement, from a small number of witnesses testifying.
Split Rock, in Carbon County, just south of the Monroe County line and not far from the Mount Airy Casino Resort, is seeking one of two Category 3 licenses that will be awarded later this year. The third application is the Valley Forge Convention Center in King of Prussia, a Philadelphia suburb.
