The November 9
October 6, 2008
For now all is quiet in the WSOP the final nine players have been determined and now we must wait for November 9th to see who will win the biggest prize in poker, not to mention over $9 million dollars.
The final table has been dubbed the November 9 due to Harrah’s new marketing strategy that has the final delayed until November 9th to give time to the media to get to know the players and provide more marketing support to the WSOP. This also gives time for the players to develop strategy’s and negotiate sponsorship deals.
Canada is well represented at this years World Series of Poker Main Event with two Canadian poker players, they are professional Scott Montgomery and amateur Darus Suharto.
Russian player Ivan Demidov already set a record by being the poker player to ever reach the final table at the main event in both the WSOP Europe and WSOP held in Las Vegas. Ivan managed to hold onto a third place finish in London and his confidence is riding high.
Here are the November Nine by chip count:
1 - American Dennis Phillips who was the most aggressive player of the final two tables and his strategy seemed to work as he is the chip leader with a massive $26,300,000 in chips. Phillips is the oldest player at 53 and works as a Account Manager for a trucking company.
2 - Russian Ivan Demidov who only started playing poker in 2006 is not affraid to mix it up with his aggressive play has already made the history books with his very impressive third place finish a the WSOP Europe main event this year. Demidov is on top of the world right now at only 27 he knows when to change gears and be agressive and with $24,400,000 in chips has a great chance of winning his first WSOP bracelet.
3 - Canadian Scott Montgomery also 27 years calls Perth, Ontario home. Scott burst onto the WSOP this year and has already cashed for more than $400,000 dollars. Scott is used to playing against the best in the world on a regular basis and with $19,690,000 in chips is a series threat to take home the bracelet.
4 - Danish accountant Peter Eastgate is only 22 years old but already has a legion of fans behind him as he makes his quest to become the youngest player to ever win the WSOP main event, a record currently held by non other than Phil Hellmuth. The Scandinavian representative has $18,375,000 in chips to start the final table.
5 - American Ylon Schwartz is a avid chess player that showed great disipline during the second to last hand of the night with his pocket queens but managed to only lose the minimum amount. Ylon is 38 years old and has a few years of WSOP experience that he will rely on as he will be starting in the lower half of the group with $12,525,000 in chips.
6 - Canadian accountant Darus Suharto may have put his job at risk by returning to Canada a day late by playing on Day 7 of the WSOP main event, but I don’t think he has to worry much about that with a guarntee of over $1million dollars and how knows how much in endoresments he might want to consider poker a little more seriously as a career. At 39 years old and $12,520,000 in chips he considers himeself to be a “complete donkey” but has hopes of becoming the fisrt Canadian to win the WSOP Main Event.
7 - American David “Chino” Rheem is a hot commodity now by both his investors and the Florida police. Rheem was backed into the final table by a bunch of investors who will now make a large cheering section for him at the final table if he’s there. Also looking to talk to Rheem is the Florida police department who have a warrent for his arrest, hopefully Rheem can get this cleared up before November 9th and continue on with his dream of winning the WSOP bracelet. Rheem is 28 years old and has a chip count of $10,230,000 dollars.
8 - American Craig Marquis is a 23 year old student from Texas. Marquis is a avid online player and currently holds the second shortest stack at the final table with $10,210,000. This is the second year that Marquis has played int he WSOP and he will look to double up quickly and stay in contention for the bracelet.
9 - American Kelly Kim is a professiona poker player from California. Kim is 31 years old and will start the final table as the short stack with $2,620,000 in chips. Kim does have some WSOP experience and did manage to cash at last years event and he hopes that this experience will take him deeper than the expected ninth place finish. With only enough chips to cover 10 blinds expect to see Kim with all his chips in the middle early.
