Tips for Online Poker Success
February 9, 2009
I have enjoyed playing poker online successfully for a few years now, and so I have decided to share some tips with you that will hopefully help you in turn to share some of my successes.
You need to ask yourself a simple question before you begin to play poker online for money – do you enjoy it? Could you realistically see yourself playing it for several hours every day and not getting bored? If this is not the case, you should stop reading right now; poker is not the game for you. I personally feel it is great to meet people from such a vast variety of cultures and walks of life, people who I would never have even dreamed of meeting had I not played poker. However, some arrogant players will take any opportunity they can to be rude and impolite to those around them. Try to ignore these comments as best you can.
You will quickly notice that online, the play is much faster and more fluid than in a casino. You can play many more hands in the same amount of time, so do not worry about having to go hours without having a hand worth touching. However, you still should take care and play as tightly as you would in a casino. Stay patient, and bide your time; if you wait, eventually a hand worth playing aggressively will come up for you.
If you play patiently enough, you will be making money. The main reason people lose money online is impatience. Since so many people lose to impatience, there must be people who win due to their mistakes. Play tightly and aggressively, and you will be the one raking in the money.
When you are not being dealt the best hands, occupy yourself in other ways such as by listening to your favorite music artists, or perhaps putting the radio on. You should however stay attentive to the tables as you can pick up important tells from players by doing this.
No doubt during your time playing you will come up against players who bet completely irresponsibly, going all-in on almost every hand and trying to force all of the other players out of the pot simply by intimidation. These players are very dangerous, but when the time is right and you have a monster hand, play it and make them pay big.
It is important to keep your poker bankroll and money you actively use in real life separate. Do not confuse the two, and no matter what, do not use money you need outside of the game to play poker with. If you find yourself doing this, you need to take a step back and have a long think about the impact playing poker could end up having on your life.
Another thing you should avoid is setting yourself an amount of money to earn per night, with the mentality of “I will not stop playing until I have earned $x.” This is very detrimental, as it can lead to fatigue, which leads to bad play. Also, if you end up going down overall, your losses can quickly double or even triple.
With these tips in mind, I wish you good luck at the tables, and I hope to see you someday on an online poker site.
